Plessey today unveiled a complete LED lighting module including optics with a thickness of just 5.6mm providing lighting designers with a new level of design freedom. Alternative solutions typically require optics that are usually 100mm deep and 111mm in diameter for a comparable light output and beam.
The new Plessey Orion PLWS3000 series is an LED Array Module delivering over 3000 lumens, integrating LED and optics into a tiny module just 5.6mm thick and 82mm in diameter. It provides an exceptionally compact replacement for COB modules with directional light and impressive thermal characteristics opening new opportunities for creativity in industrial and architectural lighting design. Plessey is anticipating applications for the module in the design of track, retail, architectural, high intensity, spot and directional lighting and the slimline module will be particularly attractive for architectural applications.
Plessey achieved this size and performance breakthrough by combining its ground breaking StellarTM beam forming optics and GaN on Si LED technology. Orion is the first Plessey module to use Stellar Optical Technology.
Paul Drosihn, Plessey’s Head of Modular Products said, “The reduced form factor of the OrionTM is a major move forward in the market, eliminating design constraints and allowing more design freedom for lighting designers. Typically using COB type LEDs or modules makes it difficult to control colour over angle, forcing designers to make fixtures much larger in size. The OrionTM, with Stellar TM beam forming technology represents the next phase in LED lighting with low cost, high efficiency and greater control of light. Greater control over the direction and quality of light is a crucial element in retail, industrial, hospitality and outdoor lighting, this combined with the slimline design and impressive thermal characteristics mean the OrionTM gives lighting designers and architects far more design freedom.
He continued, “The size / performance envelope achieved here allows industrial high bay and architectural luminaires used in high end offices, homes and retail outlets to be created in a new way. The improved thermal characteristics of the Plessey technology allows the heat sink to be reduced in size in turn allowing the end fixture to be smaller and less obtrusive. OrionTM will reset the expectations in the lighting market.”
