New BioMon Sensor IC Detects Heart Rate and Pulse Oximetry

Optoelectronics specialist, Intelligent LED Solutions (ILS), has announced the release of BioMon, an integrated circuit based sensor from OSRAM that uses advanced optoelectronic technology to monitor heart rate and blood oxygen levels.








Measuring only 4.7 x 2.5 x 0.9 mm, the tiny BioMon optoelectronic sensor is expected to facilitate further innovation in the area of wireless health monitoring equipment and fitness tracking devices.








“The BioMon sensor has been developed to address the future demand for wireless health monitoring devices,” said Adrian Amor, Director at ILS. “With its small footprint, low power usage and configurable behaviour, the BioMon will be an ideal starting point for new designs in this field.”


BioMon is currently available in three variants, each of which is available mounted on a reference design board that will enable early stage development and prototyping. The heart rate and oxygen level monitoring is achieved through the transmission and detection of green and red light. Green light transmitters are used for pulse rate measurement at the wrist, whereas red or infrared emitters are used for pulse rate measurement on the finger, as they can also measure the oxygen content of the blood (pulse oximetry). In combination with a photodiode, the infrared LED can also be used as a proximity sensor.

“There are three BioMon solutions from which to choose,” said Adrian Amor. “Each one has a different set of characteristics, so that the BioMon can be used for a wide variety of applications. In addition to this, our engineers are available to offer technical support and assistance with both product design and prototyping.”
