Defect Analysis: Why You Should Never Throw Away the Evidence
In this video Bob looks at a simple but critical defect issue in electronics manufacturing: process analysis, failure analysis and shop floor identification.
When a failure occurs in manufacturing, you’ll usually first spot it at test engineering, or at rework and repair. One fault might be a one-off. Two could be coincidence. But once faults start appearing in multiple units, it’s essential to gather examples of the failure and record exactly where it occurs.
Photograph the component and the defect position — and always retain the samples. Don’t throw them away. It’s often quicker to simply remove a component and replace it, but doing so can destroy the very information we need to analyse the root cause.
